Ward 6 Information

Welcome to Ward 6 (Mixed Ward)
 We are here to make your stay pleasant and give you the best quality care possible.
We would appreciate it if you keep to the ward rules, routines and protocols, as it will ensure the best care for you or your family.






  
Here are a few things we would like you to know about our ward:
 Unit Manager
·         Our Ward Manager is Snr Sr D Smith.
·         Please do not hesitate to call her if you have any complaints, questions or requests.  If she is not available, please ask for the Sr/Senior in charge.

Admission
·         A nurse will be attending to your admission shortly.  Please be patient.

Doctors
·         Most doctors will do their rounds early in the mornings; however they do not have specific times at which they do rounds.  In some cases doctors are busy in theatre; they will do their rounds as soon as they are done.  Patients are requested not to phone the doctors.  If you are uncertain about anything, do not hesitate to ask any of the staff members.  If they are not able to help, they will phone the doctor.  On weekends, another doctor from the practice will do rounds if your doctor is not available.

Resting Times:
·         11h00 – 12h00 Lights out
·         14h00 – 15h00 Lights out
·         22h00 – Lights out

Visiting Hours:
·         10h00 – 11h00 Morning
·         15h00 – 16h00 Afternoon
·         19h00 – 20h00 Night
Visitors that do not keep to these visiting hours will be reported to the patient’s doctor. Visitors must report to the duty station before visiting.

Isolation Patients:
·         Please be informed that it is necessary to shift you into a private room to prevent spread of disease.
·         Regular hand washing is required from you as well as family members visiting you.

Slip and Fall:
·         If you wear slippers, please make sure they have got rubber soles.
·         There is slip and fall notifications by each bed, please read for more information.
·         Cot sides for patients 60yrs & older

Empty beds:
·         Please do not sit on the empty beds, if there are no chairs available, please ask the staff.

Patient files:
·         Patient files are strictly for use by the hospital staff.  All medical records are confidential.  If you have any queries about the results or treatment of yourself or your family member, please discuss it with the nursing staff or the doctor.
              Please do not take your file home with you.
Post-op theatres:
·         When staff receives patients back from theatre, they will first make the patient comfortable and give pain medication and then family will be allowed to quickly see patient (not more than 5 minutes). Please adhere to visiting hours thereafter. Our first priority is the patient and they must rest.  Please inform your family to respect visiting hours for the sake of other patients as well.

Discharge:
·         Patients will only be allowed to go home on doctor’s orders.
·         If you feel you need any help or have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
·         If you need help to get to your car, ask the nurse assisting you to call the porter, he will take you to your car with a wheelchair.
·         Please sign all necessary paper work before you go home, and please complete our quality card.  Let us know about any complaints and any compliments you have, so we can focus improving our service.

Private Patients:
·         When doctor discharges private patients, please note that we need to finalize your file in order for our admin offices to finalize your account which needs to be discussed with you before discharge.

Meal and Tea times:
·         Breakfast - 08:00
·         Lunch – 12:00             
·         Supper – 17:00
·         Tea time – 05:00 – 10:00 and 15:00 – 20:00.  For an extra cup please ring bell.
·         Plates will be removed 09:00, 13:00 and 18:00 to ensure the neatness of the ward.

Day Case Patients:
·         We prefer that you eat and drink something before you are discharged.

X-rays:
·         Patients must take all x-rays home on discharge unless doctor keeps the x-rays after theatre.
·         The ward will not keep x-rays for any patients longer than 7 days.

Pain medication:
·         Pain medication rounds will be done – please do not refuse pain medication if it is offered, as this may cause a delay in administration of pain medication, if you request it in between rounds.  However, if your pain medication does not have the desired effect, please feel free to ask for additional medication.
·         When you get pre-medication or oral medication during the day in our medicine glasses, please return our medicine glasses after you have taken your medication.

Physiotherapist:
·         They visit the patients daily and also if a physio is available for a second visit.  Please confirm treatment and exercise with your therapist.  Also confirm when you must see the physio again after discharge.

Doctors’ orders:
·         Please keep to doctor’s order.
·         No smoking before theatre
·         No eating before theatre (6 hours before)

General:
·        Our Hospital policy advises you to take your home medication (with a Rusk at least) at 06h00 in the mornings – Please bring your medication to the hospital in its original packaging.
·        Our Hospital Pharmacy does not issue chronic medicine – Please remember to bring your own chronic medication in its original packaging to the hospital.

Waste disposal:
·         Bins with blue/clear bags is used for general waste for example, cans / papers.
·         Bins with red bags is used for medical waste.  (Please keep away from the red bins)
·         Small blue bags in the toilets is provided for sanitary towels (pads).
