Ward 3 Information

Welcome to our Paediatric ward
Your child / baby is our patient in the Paediatric ward and we would like to ensure that quality nursing care is rendered at all times. Please communicate any problems, queries or concerns to the nurse so that all needed information can be explained to you as the parents play a vital part in the child / baby's recovery.
Kindly adhere to the visiting hours as this ensures that your child / baby receives quality nursing care and sufficient rest in order to recover and be discharged as soon as possible. One parent may remain with the child / baby between visiting hours and at night after 20:00. Your child is our priority and space is limited. This is also done to ensure access control and in turn, safety.
Visiting hours are as follows:
-          10:00 – 11:00
-          15:00 – 16:00
-          19:00 – 20:00
The nursing staff who is working in the Paediatric ward have a passion for the children / babies that they care for and their patient is their priority. At times procedures, tests or observations are needed which is unfamiliar to the child / baby and may upset them.
Usually on admission your child / baby is feeling very ill, irritable and afraid and as a parent you need to trust the Dr and nurses to work in the best interests of the patient so that treatment may be commenced in order for your child to recover. Your baby / child will have an ID band on for identification and for access control reasons. Your baby / child are not allowed to leave the ward unless accompanied by the nurse to the x-ray department or for other specified tests.
Parents and visitors are advised to please wash their hands or use the Gemstar dispensers available when entering and exiting the ward. This is done to prevent the spread of infection within the unit, to the patient, to the visitor and also prevents any infections from being taken home to the rest of the family or friends. Also do not allow your child to play in the other rooms as their diagnosis or infection may differ which could put your child at risk of getting another infection in the hospital.
For the safety of your baby / child, please ensure that the cot sides are pulled up at all times, especially if leaving the baby unattended. Please inform the nurses if you are leaving so that we can be aware that the child is alone and that we may update the records of what the baby / child ate and drank whilst with you. Please also inform the nurse when the baby vomits or has loose stools. A small red plastic bag is also available to dispose the nappies in the small red box in the room.
Please inform the nurses when you need help with your baby / child even for basic needs as we allow parents to still play an active role in caring for their baby / child whilst in hospital.
Kindly bring the basic necessities with to the hospital such as formulae, bottles, nappies, clothes and toiletries. Please do not bring extra blankets, soft toys, laptops, etc.  to the hospital as this has a risk of infection and contamination that may cause secondary infection on child's discharge. We also have very limited space and would prefer to render the best quality care to each baby / child.
At night, a sleeper couch and linen is available after 21:00 for the parent that would prefer to stay over by their baby / child for the night. This needs to be taken back to the waiting area before 6:00 in the morning for the pre-operative patients and so that we are able to continue with the care of your baby / child. No parents or visitors are allowed to sit on the patients’ bed or cot.
We, the nurses in the Paediatric ward, would like to wish your baby / child a speedy recovery. Please do not hesitate to speak to the nurses with concerns, problems or questions. Also note that you can ring the bell in order for the nurse to come to you to assist.
Best wishes from all the nurses working in the Paediatric Ward - Contact details: (013)2838729
